You do not need special tools to check an egg. A bowl of cold water and a flat plate will tell you most of what you want to know.
Fill a bowl with cold water and gently put the egg in.
A very fresh egg sinks and lies flat on its side. An older egg still sinks but stands up on one end. It is fine to use, so use it soon. An egg that floats is old, and it is best to throw it away.
This works because every egg has a small pocket of air inside. The pocket grows as the egg gets older, and more air lifts the egg.
Crack the egg onto a flat plate. In a fresh egg, the yolk sits up high and the white stays close around it. In an older egg, the yolk is flatter and the white spreads out thin.
A bad egg has a strong smell you cannot miss. If it smells wrong, throw it away, whatever the other tests said.
